West Coast National Park, South Africa - Famous for Spring Wild Flowers

The winters of Cape Town are often seen as miserable cold and wet, and may be perceived as not the best time to visit this popular city. What many appear not to know is that, during the winter, there will be many lovely warm and sunny days, which is why the winter is often called Cape Town's secret season. Accommodation during this time is plentiful and rates are at their lowest, which is why those in the know take advantage to enjoy Cape Town when there are fewer visitors and less traffic.

Spring in the Western Cape is popular for colourful natural displays of wildflowers. This year's winter was notable for early, heavy rains but many warm days, and has resulted in early blossoming of the wildflowers in many of the reserves. One of the notable parks for observing the wild flower displays lies just 40 min drive from Cape Town at the West Coast National Park and should be included in any visitor's itinerary. Although the park is open all year, the upper section, known as the Postberg section, is closed to the public for most of the year to preserve its pristine natural condition and is opened only during the spring flower season months of August to October.

When one enters the Postberg gate, one may feel like it is the entrance to an enchanted kingdom. The plains are carpeted with the most magnificent display of brightly colored wild flowers, which stretch as far as the eye can see in every direction. Fields of red, yellow, blue, orange and white colours dominate the landscape, with some areas seeming like snow-covered fields from the masses of white daisies. While one requires a vehicle to drive through the Park, it is worth stopping now and then to walk the pathways to admire the many floral gems that may go unnoticed amongst the masses of flowers that make up the floral carpet. These beautiful and colourful blooms and bulbs can easily be overlooked amongst the masses of tightly packed flowers that make up the carpet. A walk in the flowers will also enable one to obtain a close up of the beautiful individual colourful blooms of the various types of flowers. Visitors may be rewarded by the site of various antelope grazing in the flowered covered fields, as the Park is home to indigenous game which includes Bontebok, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest and Kudu as well as Zebra.

The West Coast National Park is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the West Coast and the beautiful blue Langebaan lagoon whose shores span the eastern side of the reserve. One can rent chalets in the Park or be more adventurous and rent a houseboat, or a cottage at Kraalbaai on the Lagoon. There not only beautiful views at this spot, of lovely clean white sand beach but a number of bbq pits with picnic tables and benches as well as clean toilet facilities. The sheltered islands and beautiful beaches of the lagoon are home to a many seabirds and migrant waders, such as heron and flamingos. Bird fanciers are catered for in the Park with a number of strategically located hides, which are detailed on the complimentary map of the Park that will be given to the visitor at the entrance. On the Atlantic side of the Park there are lovely beaches with dedicated picnic spots and barbecue pits for an enjoyable day out with the family.

Coinciding with the wildflower season is the annual migration of whales which leave their home in the Antarctic to mate and calf in the warmer waters of the coasts of South Africa, where they linger for several months; usually leaving towards the end of October. There are several observation spots in the West Coast National Park from which the visitor may be lucky enough to sight one of these giant aquatic creatures basking in the sun.

The Geelbek restaurant in the Park provides a variety of traditional dishes for those not wishing to do it themselves, and the visitor is sure to enjoy dining in the beautifully restored Cape Dutch manor house that dates back to 1740. Meals are served on the terrace, enabling one to enjoy the outdoors or in the dining room of the house with its beautiful old wooden beams, floors and woodwork. Whilst the menu is not extensive, the quality of the food and its pleasantly affordable prices, makes this an enjoyable spot to linger at the end of your wild flower viewing. The restaurant not only serves a range of drinks and cool beers, but offers also a selection of affordable wines from the local area, available either as a whole bottle or by the glass.

The recommended route to follow from Cape Town to the West Coast National Park is head out along the N1 highway and then take R27 exit, through Milnerton, and along the excellent West coast road. The Entrance to the park will be found shortly after the turn to the little beach village of Yzerfontein. An entry fee to contribute to conservation costs, is payable at the Park, with lower rates for South Africans than overseas visitors.

Visit Key West

I never had any desire to go to Florida. It just never appealed to me in any way. It seemed to be a place that in my mind catered to the more mature population and that translated to a not fun or exciting time. So when my boyfriend said he wanted to go to Florida for three weeks I wasn't exactly jumping over the moon to go, but I thought I would make the best of it and have a good time. I was in for a big surprise.

Florida is awesome; more specifically Key West is awesome. Key West was not what I expected it to be at all. The rental we stayed in was so cute and the people that worked there were incredibly nice and helpful. They steered us towards some great restaurants and places where we could listen to live music. You have to go out and experience Duval crawl. If you don't know what that is don't worry I didn't either, but when you think about it, it is pretty self-explanatory. Duval Street is where the best restaurants and clubs in Key West are located and the crawl part is because if you go to all of them you will be crawling back to your vacation rental. We had an amazing time.

There is live music in just about every establishment, and not the live music that is only good because you are on vacation, the bands playing where actually quite good. The people you meet in my opinion are the best part. Everyone was super friendly and social. I never once felt uncomfortable or like I didn't belong. I'm only 27 and I was talking to people twice my age and older and I loved every minute of it. We went to a really great place that has been a staple of Key West for ages named Sloppy Joes, and I would say it is one of the best places I have ever been to.

The worst part about the whole Duval crawl experience is probably the morning after, because you are so tired from staying up all night, but it is so worth it. I had an easy time recovering. Our vacation rental had a pool so I just made myself a cold drink and sat by the pool until it was time to do it all over again.

People who go to Key West want to have fun and let their hair down. I would definitely say don't go if you want to just have peace and quiet and read a book, which you can do, but you will be wasting the experience.

Beyond Kilimanjaro Trekking: 5 Fabulous Sights in Tanzania

With its richly varied geography, ecosystems and cultures, Tanzania has much to draw the adventurous spirit to its mountains, grasslands and forests. Kilimanjaro trekking is one of its foremost attractions, but by no means the only one - here are five of the other most incredible experiences the country has to offer.

Mount Meru

As those who embark on a Kilimanjaro trekking journey will be aware, acclimatisation is all-important. Many people opt to prepare themselves for the main ascent by climbing Mount Meru (4,562 metres) first - but that's not the only reason to explore this striking mountain, which has its own beauty and richness. The tenth highest mountain in Africa, this gracefully sloped stratovolcano sits at the heart of Arusha National Park, providing a home for numerous species of plants and animals on its fertile flanks - including leopards, monkeys, and a hundreds of bird species.

The Serengeti

There are many wonderful wildlife watching options for those who want to combine Kilimanjaro trekking with a safari. Among the most exciting is the chance to watch the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti - the largest migration of mammals to be seen anywhere in the world. Also to be found in these stunning grasslands are gazelles, zebras, buffaloes and lions.

Ngorongoro Crater

Considered by many to be among the best places to see wildlife in all of Africa, the Ngorongoro Crater lies in the sweeping plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest intact crater on Earth, and its unique size and shape make it the perfect natural wildlife enclosure. This is the East African ecosystem in miniature, with almost every species represented, including elephants, zebra, lions, and the rare black rhino.

Oldupai Gorge

One thing that becomes apparent to those who choose to explore it is that Tanzania is a truly awe-inspiring place - from the breathtaking heights that can be reached when you go Kilimanjaro trekking, to the dizzying sense of ancient history imparted by the prehistoric discoveries at Oldupai Gorge. Also called Olduvai Gorge, this is one of the most legendary archaeological sites in the world: investigations made down this steep ravine have revealed some of the oldest known human remains and stone tools, earning it the nickname 'The Cradle of Mankind' and providing significant evidence for the theory that humans evolved in East Africa.

Zanzibar

For a completely different experience in East Africa compared to Kilimanjaro trekking and wildlife watching, head to Zanzibar. The archipelago, made up of a scattering of Islands in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania, is a semi-autonomous zone known for its flawless beaches, spice trade, and complex, layered history. From its lush jungles hosting rare species, to the gorgeous heritage sites of the old capital Stone Town, this is a place that visitors will find hard to forget.

Jude Limburn Turner is the Marketing Manager for Mountain Kingdoms, an adventure tour company who have run Kilimanjaro trekking itineraries for over 20 years. They now offer treks and tours worldwide, including destinations in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Central and South East Asia.

The Spirit of The South

The South is a remarkable land with a spirited history and a subsequent flair all its own. During America's infancy, the Old South was quite easily the epicenter and height of stability and prosperity within the American colonies and early Union. It reflected an appreciation of European grace, charm, and cultural values. It always stood for self-reliance and self-determination, but grew to become too dependent on the slave trade. The rise and fall of the Confederacy, its subsequent Reconstruction back into the Union, projected into its eventual economic recovery and growth to become what some call the New South. This shows the character and determination to overcome adversity and hardship to become the spirited powerhouse it is today.

The South is in the southeastern and south-central region of the United States. It begins at the Mason-Dixon line in the north of Maryland, and continues along state borders to west Texas. Here are some highlights of this noble and different kind of America.

Georgia's Legendary Cities

One of the principle cities in The South is Atlanta, Georgia, a city that has emerged with an eye to the future. Atlanta is a modern metropolis and gateway for travel and economy in the New South. Its sleek and contemporary architecture nicely frames the city and demonstrates a bold contrast to the quaint drawl often associated with Southern sleepy towns. Atlanta is a major U.S. hub of industry, and as such, offers many of the refinements afforded by such a metropolis. Along with Baltimore, Atlanta is also known as the growing capital of African-American prosperity.

Travel east from Atlanta to the coast and see Savannah for a fine and prideful example of the Old Southern. Grand trees spectacularly line Savannah's main thoroughfare. The city has a host of open courtyards and parks that punctuate the lavishly adorned Georgian and Victorian homes and buildings. I recommend a gentle stroll through picturesque Savannah.

Miami

Miami is an unapologetic city of several million people perched on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in southern Florida, a couple hour's drive north from Key West. The city has a huge Latin American population that is mostly Cuban. The cultural overlap is brazenly apparent on every corner, especially in the music, dancing, and food. The Latin American influence in Miami is pronounced and it gives the city and Miami Beach a distinct Latin American feel that is reflected in a uniquely exotic and vivacious draw. The Latin atmosphere and the fact that Spanish is so widely spoken that Miami seems more like Latin America than the United States.

Miami and Miami Beach, namely South Beach, have gained a pervasive reputation as an unremitting Latino party town and it has one of the most explosive clubbing scenes in the country. To locate the best places, speak with locals who run boutique clothing stores, young restaurant waiters, hotel concierges, and other tourists. Clubs come and go, they are renamed, relocate, and if they are new they will be very busy. ID is always checked, a passport is best, and many may limit or not allow those under 23, and many require a 50-50 ratio of girls to guys. Guys will be charged a cover far more often than a hot girl. Figure it out and have fun.

The Florida Everglades

The South lays claim to one of the most massive and diverse ecological environments in the United States. Throughout the southernmost states you can find swampy bayous, but in southern Florida you will find the mysterious and dramatic forests of the Everglades. The Everglades occupy a massive section of the lower half of the state and consist of a dense, slow-moving river and surrounding ecological systems.

Many are drawn to Florida for the incredible sand powdery beaches and pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico coast or the ever popular sandy beaches along the Atlantic coast. While others are drawn to the atypically American fantasy-lands of Disney World, Epcot Center, and Universal Studios Theme Parks in Orlando. But for a well-rounded excursion, include a short boat tour into the wetlands and swamps of the Everglades where you may encounter a lounging alligator, a mighty python or huge anaconda (it's wise to have an experienced tour guide along for the trip).

The Mississippi Blues

The Mississippi River juts through the southern plains like a great vein into the Mississippi Delta and deposits itself into the Gulf of Mexico. It was from this delta region that former slaves and their descendents transformed their pain and grief into the hauntingly beautiful melodies known as the blues. Their music eventually gave rise to rock n' roll, bebop, and jazz, all expressions of American music today, and they owe their heritage to the songs of those souls.

The dynasty of that music can still be followed all the way back, either by perusing the sounds of Nashville, Tennessee, a musical Mecca, or by following the trail of blues clubs and gin joints that flow along with the mighty Mississippi River. The rich deposits from the river have made the surrounding fields some of the most fertile in the South, explaining why this region gave rise to some of the largest agricultural plantations of the antebellum era. The mighty Mississippi also provided efficient water transportation of peoples and goods, and cultural trends travelled as well. It is still possible to take a steamboat cruise through this remarkable region while meandering slowly upstream in big-wheeled steamboats along the tree-lined embankment.

New Orleans

The yearly Mardi Gras carnival in February is one enormous celebration, a mad collective expression of sights, sounds, experiences and emotions flowing through the streets of The Big Easy, or New Orleans. But on any given day in the city, you will hear the sound of lively brass echoing the blues through the byzantine streets along with the smells of sweet spicy ribbons of Cajun food flowing through the air.

The laxidasical Louisianan accent is a fusion of Creole French and a uniquely slow southern drawl that somehow blends into the mood of this city, while every aspect of New Orleans reflects the unexpected, unusual, and the vibrant.

Strolling through the French Quarter is like stepping into the past, the gorgeous ornate ironwork verandas merge into one another, embraced by winding vines of ivy. Browse the Voodoo Shop windows and stop for some gumbo, and you will likely never forget immersing yourself in the spirit of the magical Big Easy.

Texas

You have surely heard the saying that everything is bigger in Texas. Well, it's almost true. Texas is a large state that is mostly arid but it has large swaths of grazing fields and the beautiful and picturesque Guadalupe Mountains. The Texan culture is bold with BBQ cuisine, country music and "line dancing" as a Texas pastime. Houston is the largest city in Texas and has a flourishing arts and culture scene with an impressive museum district. While in Texas, try and catch a rodeo, eat a basket of braised ribs, and see some live country music. You should find yourself smiling nonstop.

5 Distinguishing Characteristics of Spanish Cuisine

There is little doubt that the world truly has a lot to offer when it comes to culinary goodness. Whether it may be in your home town or a totally different country, there will always be an abundance of really delectable food that will have you begging for more. One of the most sought-after cuisines these days is Spanish food. It is often labeled as the "people's cuisine", mainly for the reason that it possesses a down to earth goodness, and is also generally very easy to make. What makes it even more popular with a lot of folks is the fact that its ingredients can be obtained either regionally or locally.

One may notice that every region in Spain has its own unique brand of signature dishes. This is because of the fact that it was difficult to travel from one region to another until the late 20th century. The area is filled with mountains which run in different directions, making it somewhat of a challenge to cross over to another area. This caused people to concoct their own recipes for foods we know now recognize as Spanish cuisine. Even up to now, a lot of the recipes are still cooked very much the same way they were several hundreds of years ago, while there are some which have notable influences from other cultures, say American, as well. Despite all this, there is little question that the food in Spain will always be tasty and delicious. Below are some of the unique characteristics which best describe Spanish cuisine:

· Many of the dishes in Spain make use of olive oil. This is due to common knowledge in the region that olive oil can offer a lot of health benefits, even more so than vegetable or corn oil.

· For the most part, Spanish dishes are known for their Mediterranean roots. What this means is that there's a good chance you'll be getting dishes which are filled with seafood for ingredients. One fine example of this is Paella.

· Most people often mistake Spanish cuisine for Mexican. However, both of them could be further away from each other. One example of this is the fact that you'll be expecting bread to be served with your dishes. If you order tortillas, you'll be treated with an omelet instead.

· Generally speaking, Spanish cuisine mainly consists of tapas. The food prepared is usually for large groups of people, unlike other countries that serve for one person.

· Unlike other countries, Spanish food offers a lot of variations, especially from region to region. The northern regions of Spain often incorporate meat and chicken in their dishes, while the southern parts are all about shellfish and other types of seafood.

Hong Kong, Where East Meets West

Fragrant Harbor, known to the world as Hong Kong, is also promoted as Asia's World City or the place where east meets west. It is all of these things. Sitting on the south coast of China, surrounded by the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong's low taxes and free trade have made it a wealthy and vibrant city. Its famous skyline, with more than twelve hundred skyscrapers, is literally at the top of the world, with more of them being higher than in any other city.

A British colony in the mid-Nineteenth Century, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 but operates under a political system that is separate from China's. Hong Kong is an important international financial center with a capitalist economy. Most of its citizens are Chinese but, while leaning towards the culture of the East, they are heavily influenced by the West also. They take pride in being Hong Kongers rather than Chinese, with a culture that is an East-West fusion. There are two official languages in Hong Kong, Chinese and English. There is a law in Hong Kong protecting freedom of religion, with a huge variety of religions being practiced that include Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Judaism. However, believe it or not, a majority of Hong Kongers are atheists.

HOLIDAYS

Hong Kong public holidays can be traditional such as the Chinese New Year or worldwide such as Christmas Day or New Year's Day. Some are quite colorful like the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated in June. This ancient festival commemorates the death of a poet who is said to have drowned himself in the river to protest government corruption. Villagers got on their boats with rice wrapped in silk to offer the fish to save his body from being eaten by them. Today these rice packages are wrapped in leaves and known as zongzi, and the boats have become the ornately decorated dragon boats that take part in the races each year.

MUSIC

The culture of Hong Kong has given rise to a new music genre called Canto pop, a hugely popular mixture of both East and West that blends both Cantonese rhythms with jazz, blues, and rock and roll.

FOOD

Hong Kong food has been described as a world's fair of food, and indeed it is. The most well-known and popular is dim sum, small pieces of steamed dumplings with different fillings. These are usually served on a rolling cart from which diners can choose any number and variety.

The Gao is the normal dim sum that is wrapped in a thin skin made of rice flour or wheat starch and different ones are filled with either shrimp, mushrooms, cabbage, pork, tofu or chopped vegetables.

Da Been Lo or Hot Pot is a type of Asian stew that is cooked and served from a metal pot in the middle of the table while the various ingredients are put into it. They can be sliced meat, vegetables, wontons, or seafood. It is accompanied by a dipping sauce.

Seafood is naturally quite popular in a city on the water. There is a little fishing village called Lei Yue Min where a bit of the old city sits among the modern one. Here one can find al fresco dining where you can pick your fish from a market stall tank and take it to one of the dining places. They will prepare it for you for a reasonable price.

Hong Kong wonton noodles are famous worldwide and these wontons are authentic, being handmade and using duck eggs. The noodles are wrapped around marinated pork or fish and served in a broth that has been cooked for up to six hours.

Western restaurants in Hong Kong are easy to find because they are everywhere in the city. There are also worldwide franchises such as Outback Steak House and Hard Rock. Besides American and British cuisine, there are also German beer halls, Italian pizza gardens, Spanish paella and tapas, French brasseries and Egyptian cafes.

SHOPPING

There is no end to the items that can be purchased in Hong Kong, from traditional Chinese clothing in street bazaars to computer electronics, high modern fashion or valuable jewelry. There are specialty markets selling birds, fish, flowers or antiques, all of which can be found at Stanley Market or Peddler Street on Hong Kong Island.

TOURISM

Hong Kong is one of the world's best tourist destinations and has a great many attractions to draw people of all ages. The Peak is probably the most popular. A tram takes visitors to the top of this thirteen hundred foot high vista with a beautiful panorama.

Local Disneyland is where the characters come alive for children in its six lands of fantasy.

People, who are interested in the culture of the place and its Buddhist background, should visit the beautiful Po Lin Monastery. It sits in green, lush hills with a gigantic bronze Buddha, the world's tallest, overlooking the area.

Modeled on Hollywood's walk of fame, the Avenue of Stars is along the waterfront of Victoria Harbor and honors those in the film industry in Hong Kong. A statue of Bruce Lee, the famous martial arts actor, stands along it, as well as the landmark 145-foot-high Clock Tower.

With the most magnificent skyline in the world, Hong Kong is more than a world class city. It is a place where east meets west.

The Best Departure Times for Grand Canyon Helicopter Flights

Grand Canyon flights are a terrific way to see and experience this natural wonder. Helicopter tours aren't identical, though, especially when it comes to the best time to fly. You'll want your flight to be as wonderful as possible, so keep reading. You'll find some helpful information about the best flight departure times below.

Grand Canyon Airport (located in tiny Tusayan, Arizona, about ten minutes from the South Rim's main entrance) and Las Vegas are the main departure points for Grand Canyon helicopter flights. Unfortunately, Grand Canyon helicopter tours that fly from Las Vegas directly to the South Rim don't exist. In order to make that particular trip, you'll need to board a motor coach or plane and then switch to a helicopter.

Which Rim to Visit

Many people consider the South Rim the "official" Grand Canyon. Located about 270 miles from Las Vegas, this rim is popular with travelers coming from Phoenix or central Arizona. Grand Canyon helicopter tours of the South Rim are not permitted to land on the canyon floor or even descend below the rim. But I have to admit that flying through the deepest, widest portion of the canyon (Dragoon Corridor) more than makes up for it.

If you're interested in adventure and exhilarating experiences, the West Rim would be the best choice. Landing tours at the West Rim let you add optional side trips to your Grand Canyon flight. The possibilities include a pass to the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk (the glass bridge that lets you walk 70 feet out past the rim's edge), a float trip down the Colorado River, and/or a chopper flight down to the canyon floor.

The West Rim's climate is scorching during the summer, with temperatures routinely soaring above 100 degrees F. That's why I recommend that people taking Grand Canyon flights bring water and wear sunblock, sunglasses and a hat. Sturdy shoes and a long-sleeved shirt are smart choices because the terrain is rugged and rocky. Winter temperatures are much cooler, so bring gloves, a hat and a medium-weight jacket.

Because the South Rim is more than 6,000 feet above sea level, summer temperatures are more moderate. You should still bring plenty of water and wear sunblock, however. South Rim winters are colder than at the West Rim, and snow is always a possibility. Despite the cooler weather, winter Grand Canyon flights can be a terrific experience because there won't be many visitors at the park.

Choosing a Flight Time

The specific rim, the season and the climate all play an important role when you're trying to determine the best departure time for your flight. To beat the summer heat, I recommend Grand Canyon helicopter tours that take off before lunch - the earlier the better if you're taking a West Rim landing tour. Likewise, morning flights allow you to beat the mid-afternoon thunderstorms that sweep over the area like clockwork between July and September. An afternoon flight during these months could be delayed or even canceled by bad weather.

Two other important factors tilt the scales in favor of morning Grand Canyon flights. For one thing, visibility is better in the morning. A haze in the air often forms in the summer due to pollution, dust and smoke from forest fires. This debris in the air can, however, make sunset flights absolutely spectacular. Second, the air is less turbulent in the morning, especially during the summer when minor afternoon air turbulence is fairly common.

There's no need to worry if you're unable to book a morning flight. Although it's true that mornings are better, a tour by helicopter at any time of day is an amazing experience. You'll understand what I mean as soon as your tour takes off!

Travel journalist Kelly Kirbee is an expert on tours to the Grand Canyon. If you are looking for affordable helicopter flights, she recommends checking out this web site: http://www.grandcanyonhelicopters.org/deals

Three Points to Understanding Travel in New Zealand

The popularity of New Zealand as a tourist destination has grown dramatically in recent years with the country welcoming tourist not only from neighbouring Australia and Asia, but from all over the world. This country has a lot to offer - magnificent nature which remains mostly unaffected by human activities, unique cultural traditions and various adventures. You just need to know what to expect from travelling in the country.

Best Time to Visit

There is a lot to explore in New Zealand in every season. You can enjoy all kinds of adventures in the Bay of Islands the summer, the white Queenstown slopes in winter and the lovely Christchurch gardens in the summer and autumn. There is literally something to do at any time of year.

The peak tourist season in New Zealand is the summer, which includes the months of December, January and February. The busiest time is around and right after Christmas until the middle of January. If you plan to travel to and around the country during this time, it is important that you make accommodation bookings well in advance. This is true even if you plan to hire a campervan and stay at motor home sites. These may be fully booked by the time you get there.

Getting Around

New Zealand has an excellent road network and top quality public transportation services. Within cities, you can use public buses and other public transportation services. For travelling around the country, road travel is recommended. There are plenty of highways and slightly rough, but reliable small gravel roads in remote areas. The railroad connects just a number of major cities so you will not be able to explore most of the country if you travel by rail.

When you travel by road, it is best to hire a car or a campervan. The latter option is particularly attractive as it allows you to travel through the whole country from Auckland in the North Island all the way south to Queenstown. There are numerous camping sites where you can stay around the country. One important think to note, however, is that free camping is not allowed by local law.

Planning Your Trip

There are a lot of things to see and do in New Zealand so it is best if you plan your trip in advance. The top places to visit include Auckland, Bay of Islands offering opportunities for sailing, swimming and whale watching, Abel Tasman National Park, Queenstown, known for the gorgeous natural surroundings and various adventure activities, Wellington and Christchurch.

Explore the spectacular landscape and great cultural traditions of New Zealand with Campervan Hire NZ. Pick from a wide selection of recreational vehicles and pick up and drop off points with Motorhome Rental New Zealand.

The History of Mauritius

Like any other country, Mauritius has a great story to tell. The history of Mauritius is mainly filled with different discoverers and colonisers. The presence of a certain bird, the Dodo has been extinct for a long time, it is said that the first people to discover this great island of abundant natural resources are the Arabs. In the middle ages, this same group of Arabs named the island Dina Arobi. The first appearance and register of Mauritius on a formal map is back in 1502 through the work of Italian Cartographer Alberto Cantino. The next groups of explorers to set foot in the island of Mauritius are the Portuguese. It is common fact that the Portuguese are one of the most prolific explorers in that era. Mauritius is one of those discoveries which was said to be discovered by them between 1507 and 1513.

Though already discovered by two races, none colonised and claimed ownership of the island. Than came the Dutch in 1598. A Dutch expedition that carried 8 ships led by Jacques Van Neck and Wybrandt Van Warwyck traveled a route towards the Indian Subcontinent. After a series of devastating tragedies brought by weather, the fleet was separated into two groups with three ships making its way northeast of what is known today as Madagascar. The remaining five entered the vicinity of the Island. This is the start of progress for Mauritius, which is then named after the prince of Holland, Prince Maurits.

Colonisation started in 1638. The government and the people who colonised here were faced with a lot of hardship through cyclones, droughts and famine. Sometimes, even pest infestations. In 1710, the island was totally abandoned by the Dutch. After that, the French registered themselves in the history of Mauritius. They turned Port Louis into a naval base. Today, some of the French influence is still noticeable in its structures around the capital city.

The characters in the history of Mauritius will also include the British from 1810 - 1968. They also received independence under their rule. On March 12, 1968, Mauritius became an independent state. A lot of significant changes followed like the establishment of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien or MMM led by Paul Berenger.

Now known Internationally as the Island Nation of Mauritius, it is now home to the most spectacular tourist spots and has etched itself to the list of must see destinations globally. Truly, the history of Mauritius is filled with a lot of events. Events that made it what it is today. A fusion full of different cultures and traditions.

The Best Beaches to Visit in Canggu, Bali

Just 20 minutes north of fashionable Seminyak in Bali is a more secluded paradise known as Canggu. Although the area is being developed fast, Canggu is a little slice of heaven consisting of an eight-kilometer strip of surfer beaches and emerald green rice paddies all around. Vacationers and expatriates have favored Canggu more for the feeling of peaceful seclusion it provides. Just imagine walking out of your bedroom door right into a fairy tale scene where the seawater crashes continuously against the shore and nature herself is your front yard garden.

The beaches of Canggu are not as world-renowned as other coastal areas in this well-known tropical island, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the simple pleasure of being away from all the noise of urban life. When in Canggu, take some time to get out of your luxurious villa and tread your feet on the soft, fine sands of the following beaches.

Batu Bolong Beach

Surfers visit Batu Bolong Beach for the fat and powerful waves that make this relatively quiet spot one of the best places to surf in the entire island of Bali. Batu Bolong is peaceful and undisturbed by civilization, except for one beachfront hotel and a luxurious seaside restaurant serving Balinese specialty dishes. If you're not willing to shell out less than your budget for lunch, you can also walk a little farther away from the beach for a cheaper surfer's restaurant surrounded by a number of makeshift huts selling drinks and refreshments. Batu Bolong is one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset, when the sun dips behind majestic Mount Agung and lights up the mountain's silhouette with a warm, orange glow.

Batu Mejan Beach

If you're looking for a beach party vibe that still retains the relaxed and laidback atmosphere of an out-of-the-way beach town, look no further than Batu Mejan Beach. More popular with the tourists as Echo Beach, this is the perfect place to enjoy beach barbecues with your friends and down ice-cold tropical juices while watching surfers come in and out of the water. The waves are a little rougher in Echo Beach, but there are a few spots north and south of the area that are better for swimmers.

Berawa Beach

Also known as Brawa Beach, Berawa is another place for surfers who love the thrill of riding powerful waves. The place is also safe enough for people just wanting to have a swim. Because of the recent efforts at developing Canggu for tourism, there is not much of the idyllic secluded beach that Berawa once was, but if you stroll down the seashore southwards, you will reach a lagoon with a bamboo bridge hanging right over it. Cross the bridge into Warung Agung Kayu Putih, a little known haven for sunset-lovers in Canggu. There is a low-key restaurant serving simple Balinese food and the service might be a little too relaxed for those used to lavish accommodations, but it is an excellent place to watch the sun go down.

Pererenan Beach

On the way from the Raya Canggu, you will be amazed at the resplendent greenery that flanks both sides of the road to Pererenan Beach. Undoubtedly, this area is yet to be touched by modernization, although there is a smattering of private residences here and there. The beach itself is not ideal for surfing and swimming, as the shore is lined by rocks that have been shaped and smoothed by the tide over the years. You can sit on the rocks to take in a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean or you can climb over them to land on a small strip of hidden sand ideal for sunbathing or just playing in the sand. If the water permits, you might also be able to go in for a swim.

During some Saturdays thought the year, the hall even runs popular cooking masterclasses run by the hall's head chef, an interesting event where you can learn the secrets to creating superb dishes as served by Bodysgallen Hall.

The Royal Oak - Grill Bistro

The team in the Grill room show great pride in sourcing ingredients from close range, to produce a smaller carbon footprint and provide the freshest meals available. Nowadays the Canary's are among some of the most popular holiday islands in the world throughout the year and especially for winter sun getaways, with a constant flow of sun-loving holiday makers to its black powder beaches. Hot dry winters make it an ideal holiday destination, and we can be comforted by the fact that its volcanoes are currently inactive!

9 Fiji This beautiful Volcanic Island in the South Pacific radiates life and colour, with exotic wildlife and a rich marine life. One of the few benefits of being a volcanic destination, or in this case extinct volcano, means the soil is wonderfully fertile allowing for a flourishing ecosystem around it. Fiji is well known for it's diving but for those of us that are not the biggest fans of being deep underwater with an oxygen tank strapped on our backs, there is so much to see in Fiji just by snorkeling. There is plenty of coral reef just off the beach in many areas for an array of colourful reef fish and soft coral. Flora thrives in Fiji's many parks such as the Garden of the sleeping Giant in Nausori, or wildlife in Kula Eco park. The deep white coral sands make Fiji one of our top 10 Volcanic Island holiday destinations.

8 Iceland We all know this Volcano after the chaos it caused in 2010, but can we pronounce it? Eyjafjallajokull, which caused so much travel chaos is just one of Iceland's many active volcanoes. However this densely volcanic island is still high up on the best holiday destinations. The incredible landscape caused by the volcanic properties has given Iceland some of the most exciting natural attractions such as geysers, steaming blue lagoons, bubbling mud pools, contrasted by dramatic glaciers overseen by ethereal ribbons of the northern lights. Being the largest of our Top 10 Islands it has the big city of Reykjavik as its capital and is a great starting point for discovering this fascinating Island.

7 Dominica This heavenly little island nuzzled between Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean has several volcanoes mainly sleeping, with the small chance of an eruption in the next 100 years. Thanks to science we can be warned well in advance of an eruption so we can happily visit this lush green island and enjoy its many natural delights. Visit Dominica's boiling lake, and natural hot baths and cool off in waterfalls. Get a glimpse of Dominica's sea turtles in this great snorkeling destination.

6 Reunion Island Far out in the Indian Ocean this French Island has 2 volcanoes, however Piton de Neige is extinct leaving a fascinating crater to explore. Reunion is also home to one of the worlds most active volcano's, Piton de la Fournaise, the volcano is quite accessible with some fantastic viewing points around it, smoldering away with very recent eruptions leaving the ground around it hot and smoking. Not far from Madagascar and Mauritius this tropical destination can be noted for its many waterfalls sparkling and cascading over the high plateau of the island. One of the Indian Oceans more modern islands with good roads, pretty French towns and a laid back surfing atmosphere. Some of the best surf can be found in St Leu and glorious views of the deep blue Indian Ocean will enchant you while hiking up its steep heights or cycling its many trails.

5 Cape Verde Islands off the West coast of Africa is fast becoming a top holiday destination and makes it into our top 5 of the worlds best volcanic islands. Being much less travelled than the other islands in the top 10 means you won't find the crowds here yet, but hurry they'll be here soon! Numerous Volcanoes are dotted around the 10 islands, and the most active being on Fogo Island sitting right on a volcanic hotspot, with eruptions as recent as the mid 90's. Its fertile soil surrounding it provides a rich growing space for coffee and vine plantations. You'll find plenty of culture here both African and Portuguese, and being a fairly new holiday spot you'll find some very new modern hotels and all inclusive resorts. Both black volcanic sandy beaches and pristine white sandy beaches line the shores, and one of its biggest activities - windsurfing, thrives on its aqua waters. Cape Verde is an important nesting ground for loggerhead turtles and much is being done here to protect this endangered species.

4 Montserrat This tiny island sits below St Kitts and Nevis, above Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. The active Volcano of Soufriere Hills is in the south of the island and recent eruptions mean that virtually the whole southern half of the island has been overrun with lava destroying its capital and many roads. The Volcano which started erupting in the 90's is still very much alive, however many tourists still visit the rich green contrast of the north part of the island outside the exclusion zone in order to see this incredible phenomenon of Mother Nature. You'll still find plenty of hotels and gorgeous silver beaches set to the back drop of this mighty towering caldera. Enjoy all the usual benefits of the Caribbean Sea such as snorkeling, diving, boat trips around the island and its warm temperatures all year round.

3 Azores A group of volcanic islands out in the middle of the Atlantic, now dormant, is an ever popular tourist destination. Although none of its volcanoes are active, it still offers some incredible sights such as the Santiago Lagoon on Sao Miguel Island. This is an ancient volcano caldera, and it also has a beautiful blue lagoon next to it. Filled with history, pretty towns, and gorgeous beaches the weather here is very mild but also changeable. Whale watching is one of its foremost tourist activities as well as the sights of its famous jumping dolphins. The islands of the Azores are often described as garden like with around 60 plants completely unique to these islands.

2 Bali In Indonesia makes our 2nd place in our top 10 volcanic island destinations, one of the worlds favourite holiday islands. Batur Volcano, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes resides right here in Bali. It has had quite a few small eruptions over the recent years however it's one of the top tourist attractions here. If safe to do so, you can take a hiking tour up the volcano in time to watch the incredible sunrise and spectacular views of the surrounding Caldera. Tourists flood to this tropical location due to its brilliant azure waters, white beaches and gorgeous weather often in the mid 30's during the dry season of April to September. Don't be put off by the rainy season as this can sometimes only mean an hour of tropical rain in the afternoon, and slightly cooler temperatures can be a refreshing change from the humid peak season.

And finally, the top spot goes to...

1 Hawaii The Pacific group of volcanic islands has made it to our number 1 volcanic Island destination. And so what has made it number 1 in our top 10? Well we think it really does have everything. Big island is home to one of the worlds most active volcanoes, Kilauea. Set in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park it is one of many volcanoes in Hawaii. But perhaps the reason it's most fascinating is due to the fact that you are able to witness to red hot lava flow as it cascades across the park and down into the sea. Thousands of tons of lava is produced every day increasing Hawaii's land mass and changing its landscape since it started erupting in the early 80's and has continued ever since. Hawaii offers rainforest, deserts, incredible surf, exotic sea-life, romantic coves, fantastic hotels and something to interest every age group and traveller type.

China Tours: Top Attractions for Your Itinerary

If you have one dream travel destination in the world, make sure China is on your short list. This huge country, with around 9.7 million square kilometers, is the third largest and most populated country in the world. More than 1.3 billion people live there. By comparison, the United States has 9.5 million square kilometers and a mere 314 million people.

Because of its size and endless tourist opportunities, seeing China through an experienced tour company is the best solution to make sure you gain access to some of the most amazing sights in the world. No trip to China would be complete without making sure your itinerary has the following spectacular destinations.

Hong Kong

One of the most metropolitan cities in the world, Hong Kong was a British Territory from 1839 to 1997 when it reverted to Chinese sovereignty. With its soaring skyscrapers and busy harbor, Hong Kong stands in strong contrast to the rest of China. With the highest per capita incomes in the world, Hong Kong is a leading international financial center. The city is full of bright lights, fine dining, and lovely Sampan rides in the harbor. Sampans are small traditional wooden boats, used primarily for fishing by residents.

The Yangtze

The Yangtze is dubbed the most interesting river in the world due to its extraordinary variety of attractions and scenery. The longest river in a single country, your visit to China should include several days on a luxury cruise of the Yangtze with its towering gorges and 3,000-foot cliffs that rival the Grand Canyon. The breathtaking fjords along with the lush green mountains and well-tended farms are beyond description.

Many start their travel at the 3 Gorges Dam, the largest man-made dam in the world, by entering a system of 5 ship locks. Each lock raises the cruise ship 60 feet. Be ready to enjoy majestic gorges, rock formations, and impressive waterfalls along your journey. The grandest Gorge on the Yangtze, the Qutang Gorge, is a must-see destination on the river as is a land excursion to the new city of Fendgu. The entire city has been built in the last few years including parks, homes and businesses which is a surprising sight in this ancient country.

Guilin, the Li River, and the Reed Flute Cave

Easily seen in two to three days, your itinerary must include one of China's most beautiful cities, and Guilin, and its surrounding area. Picturesque, to say the least, Guilin sits among majestic tooth-like limestone mountains and terraced rice paddies with nearby unique rock formations including Elephant Hill and the Reed Flute Cave. Guilin sits on the Li River, known as one of the most gorgeous in the world and best experienced on a river cruise. Make sure you bring your camera on this leg of your journey. You will want to experience the magic of this part of China repeatedly through your photos.

Xian

Xian, the eternal city due to its 3,100 year known history, was the capital of China for many dynasties. Buried for 2,200 years, the Terracotta Warriors were discovered in 1974 with 1,868 warriors uncovered so far. The warriors are detailed life-size models of a Chinese army ordered by Emperor Qin, whose tomb lies nearby. The warriors are one of China's main attractions.

The ancient city is a marvel as well including its well-preserved Xian Great City Wall. Nine miles in length, this massive four-story wall surrounds the city and was built nearly 600 years ago. There are also many other architectural and natural sites to see when visiting this region. The Tang Dynasty Dinner and Cultural Show is a favorite among tourists, inclusive of traditional dance and costumes from the 618-907 year period.

Beijing

The capital of the People's Republic of China, Bejing is on one of the oldest and most densely populated cites in the world. The Temple of Heaven, built with deep thought and symbolism to align with special events and elements such as the earth and sky, the 12 months, winter solstice, and harvest, remains unmatched in its grandeur. The Forbidden City with its palatial architecture and closed to visitors for many years, is home to the Palace Museum a World Heritage Site since 1987.

Another nearby attraction is the Summer Palace, including one of the world's most luxurious royal parks. Yet another World Heritage site since 1998, the Summer Palace is no longer a refuge for emperors but remains a refuge for locals and visors alike.

About 40 miles from Beijing stands The Great Wall of China. Extending some 4,000 miles long to protect against invading armies, the wall is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is visible from outer space. A visit to China simply must include this immense wall.

Dazu

With over 60,000 life-size stone carvings hand chiseled into rock walls by monks over 1,000 years and counting, Dazu should be a high priority on your China itinerary. Names a World Heritage sie in 1999, the carvings represent Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs common among the Chinese.

Conclusion

With so much to see and do, your trip to China will include in-country travel by air, boat, and possibly even rail. Again, choosing a tour agency that offers these attractions and more is crucial. This once in a lifetime tour is worth doing in style so choose a luxury tour operator with experience to ensure comfort. Make sure you leave time for some rest and relaxation to avoid needing a vacation after your vacation and most of all, be ready for memories that will last a lifetime!

Experience the Variety of Ireland in Co. Clare: All Near Shannon Airport

My wife and I have lived in Ireland for over seven years and traveled the length and breadth several times as well as virtually every byway along the west coast, our favorite area of the emerald isle. This article features Co. Clare the home of Shannon Airport which I think is better than Dublin for starting and finishing your tour around this scenic island. There is a great deal to see and do within a short drive of the airport and certainly more in Co. Clare than I can describe in this world-wide web sized article.

I have long cringed when I am asked for recommendations of unspoiled locations, as if everywhere else was spoiled. Yet that was what came to mind when I first saw the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, one of the top attractions for all of Ireland. My first visit to the cliffs in 1995 was wild and free. The only restrictions were small signs warning of possible loose earth near the edge as you lie down on a rock outcropping to peer over the edge at the whole majesty left and right. Now you must pay an entrance fee to be restricted to fenced footpaths that only allow views of one end or the other; the middle panorama is off-limits.

I must say however that the visitor centre is very well done inside and out. The architecture is very unobtrusively blended into the hillside. The exhibitions include a very well-illustrated explanation of the whole geologic phenomenon of the greater area known as the Burren. So, I had to conclude that the Centre is good value for its reasonable admission fee despite my distaste for the commercialization of this natural site.

But there is an alternative for those of us with an aversion to restrictions and crowds. About 40 km south you take the coast road out of Kilkee to Foohagh Point and Castle Point. There you will be able to drive along cliffs just as dramatic as those of Moher and be able to use your own judgment at the viewpoints as to how far to lean out for that perfect photo. Also you can continue on to Loop Head and Kilbaha Bay for more fine scenery.

The north part of Co. Clare (east of the Cliffs of Moher) is known as the Burren. It is the origin of the Cromwellian statement: "of this barony it is said that it is a country where there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury him." The Burren is a large area of unique geology about 96 square miles (250 sq. km.) that does not get a lot of attention. Perhaps due to a lack of a focal point of breathtaking scenery like so many other parts of Ireland. We, however, drive through it often because it holds the birth place of our interest in Ireland, the Burren Perfumery. Shortly after its founding in the 1960's my wife, Karin, had sampled the new fragrance, Frond, in Portland, Oregon. Through a series of "coincidences" she ended up seeking out the owner on her first trip to Ireland in the 1980's and fell in love with the stone, flora and fauna of the wide open spaces. Its uniqueness comes from few visible lakes or rivers; they are nearly all underground because rain water soaks through the surface layer of limestone until reaching bedrock. There is one river, the Aille, which actually diminishes as it flows toward the sea.

I have mentioned ten locations above but my top ten have to include Bunratty Folk Park which is a microcosm of Ireland in one pleasant stroll around the park and our current home town of Ennis, an easy to get around town with lots of attractions and historical significance and close to Shannon Airport.

Other peoples' favorites would include the surfing capital of Lahinch and traditional music capital, Doolin -- both an easy drive from all the others. In fact nowhere else in Ireland, I think, will you find more variety of the real Ireland than Co. Clare.
