The Beginnings of Islam in Burma

The Ayeyarwady River delta is known to historians of the region as the cradle of the first Burmese empire, which was established in 1055 by King Anawrahta. Alongside the unification of the country as a Buddhist kingdom, there were well-established Muslim communities in the same area, comprising settlers who intermarried with the Bamar and other local ethnic groups. These first settlers came from Persia and, while trying to reach China, began to travel to Burma, with some opting to settle there; their numbers were added to over the centuries by seamen and merchants, soldiers, refugees, and prisoners of war. The chronicles of the Bagan period record stories of certain Muslim individuals playing important roles in the history of that period. Most notable are the Shwe Byin brothers, who served the king as warriors and secret agents. Despite being later executed they were believed to have become Nats or deity-like spirits after their deaths - the spirit palace built in their honour, Taung Byone, is still the site of an annual festival.

Development of Modern Burmese Islam

In the 17th century and onwards, Burmese Muslims played an important role in the trading ports along the country's coast, controlling trade and building mosques that also served as temples for local Buddhist, Hindu and Chinese communities. These coastal towns and villages continue to this day. Elsewhere in the country, Muslims - who had long made up portions of the various armies that had been warring over parts of the country - became part of the social makeup of new communities and cities; in 1857, several quarters of the newly-founded Mandalay, and space to build mosques, were provided for Muslim citizens. Later still, the Indian diaspora under British rule meant a significant increase in the numbers of Muslims who would travel to Burma and settle there.

The official government figure for Muslims in the population is 4%, while Muslim leaders put the figure as high as 20%. There are two very different Spains as far as I am concerned. You have the Spain on the coast where the holiday makers congregate, known so well as the 'Costas'. The other Spain is everywhere else. The first is truly terrible, the rest completely interesting and quite entrancing.

To be fair I know little about areas like the Costa Blanca, the Costa Brava, and the Costa del Sol, and long may that continue. There have however in times past been occasions where my journey south had to be made on the coast of the Mediterranean. To make things worse it was in August, and the traffic was literally bumper to fender, at less than 10 miles an hour all the way. All I saw of Barcelona was concrete tower blocks, although I am sure it must have attractive area. Much further south on the Costa del Sol, places like Torremolinos is just my idea of hell on earth with lest than lovely beaches packed with holiday-makers. Behind them are miles of nearly identical restaurants offering virtually identical food catering to tastes from all over Europe with not a real Spanish dish to be seen. As for the old original town, it lies just about submerged under acres and acres of high rise concrete.

The real Spain can be found not so far away. Thanks to some superb roads it is possible to journey from north to south in Spain in around 10 hours, with not a car in sight even in Aug. Just stay clear of the coast, and do your analysis. Find a Spain where life still stops at lunchtime and does not begin again until dusk, as the afternoon siesta still commands. No shops open, just one or two cafes, no hustle, no bustle, just peace and tranquility. Add to this no Sun. megastore opening, barely even a tiny shop unless you are lucky enough to come upon one in one of the masses of unspoiled minuscule whitewashed villages you may very well be staying near.

A life in fact unchanged over the past thirty years. Yes there might be 1 or 2 UK expatriates enjoying the climate and the relaxed surroundings, happy in the knowledge that they selected the right spot to put down roots. No appalling urbanisations where you live cheek by jowl with others you share a typical language with. What is the point in being English in Spain and living next to other English folks. It becomes like suburbia in a better climate, and you almost certainly don't learn Spanish because you do not have to.

How much more fun it is to rent a finca in the country, than a villa on a little plot. It's challenging to make yourself accepted in a local shop that has fruit and vegetables to die for, and succeeed in making a transaction and then discovering that Spain inland away from the crowds is still inexpensive. Buy a enormous bag of shell on gambas and pay only little change, then if you've got to visit a town on the coast discover you are paying less than 1/2 of the holiday makers there are paying.

The other Spain is beautiful, and is just waiting to be discovered. I adore my Caribbean Holiday Spots but inland Spain runs it a close second.

It's no secret that the US produces the most popular films in the world. And we Americans love our movies. Checking out a flic at the local cinema is a truly American cultural experience. I would consider myself a bit of a stereotypical American cinephile. So much so that even while I'm on vacation in a foreign country I'm always keeping an eye out for a movie theater and the showtimes for new features.

Last year I was visiting Barcelona, Spain, as a tourist. All the movie theaters I saw had films from the US but they were all dubbed over in the Spanish language. A taxi driver told me there was one cinema that had films in the original language: one theatre in a city of 1.6 million. To me this is an insult to the film makers and film lovers alike.

Come out to the movies here in Saltillo, Mexico and I promise it's a movie-lovers delight, and you can see the American features in the original English. The big difference I noticed when I first went to the movies in Mexico was the price. The low-end, small-biz theatre will seat you for 25 pesos, which is less than two US dollars. That's admission to see the same movies that are showing in the US cinemas at 10 bucks a ticket. And you don't have to endure Spanish voice-over if you don't want to; all the theatres I've been to in Saltillo have American films in two versions: subtitled and dubbed.

If you're willing to pay more than the paltry two dollars, you can go to the Cinemex theatre at the Galerias mall here in Saltillo. The regular seating is about $4 USD with digital projection, earth-shaking surround sound and 3D when available. Bump it up to six or seven bucks and you get VIP seating. This is truly a regal experience for movie goers.

The VIP option at Cinemex is unlike any movie experience I've had in the US. You choose your seating at the ticket counter. The clerk shows you a monitor that displays what seats are available, sort of like an airplane. It's a series of love-seats, two by two seating, that are separated by margins to allow for more privacy and romance.

The VIP area has it's own waiting room and concessions stand. Among the menu items which include the regular things like popcorn and hotdogs, you can order custom-made baguette sandwiches, and French-style crepes for four dollars that rival any I've eaten in Paris.

When you enter the theater with your date, you find your leather love seat waiting for you. There's an arm-rest in the middle that can be removed to allow for enhanced cuddling. The seats also recline with feet rests. I always order a ham and cheese crepe and a strawberry jam crepe. One of the concession kids brings the crepes fresh off the grill just after the previews.

There are a lot of things that make the movies here especially Mexican. People put ketchup and mayo on their popcorn. Root-beer is never on the soft-drink menu. And the release dates for new movies differ a bit. I did get to see "The Avengers" a week before my friends in the US. Despite these small differences, and watching the flics with Spanish subtitles, I always feel like I'm getting a taste of home when I go to see the movies here in Mexico.

Long Beach is a huge part of Los Angeles County and lends plenty of that incredible Southern California weather to play in. Over fifty exhibits including a shark lagoon, 350,000 gallon tropical tank gallery, 3,200 sq. ft. outdoor aviary, and more will insure your money is well spent. Open 9:00-6:00 every day except Christmas and the Grand Prix in mid April. Truly right for all ages, the Aquarium offers events and education for kids, adults, and seniors. The price is steep (around $40.00.) But, when you consider all of the good your money does for conserving the habitat of these animals, it is money well spent.

Shoreline Village
After you've visited the aquarium, you might like to hop over to Shoreline Village less than a half mile away. The village is great for having a beer and a bite under the warm California sun as there are plenty of food options vying for your business. Excellent for people watching, the shops at the marina are fun and quirky. Cast your cares away and enjoy kicking back Cali style.

Long Beach Waterfront
Do you miss that beach feeling back home? Well, not after a trip to the waterfront. A boardwalk is well patrolled and full of good times for its land locked visitors. The view of the Pacific however, is priceless on the right day. Parking is free and so is admission on Friday. Only open Thursday-Saturday so plan your trip accordingly. The museum closes kind of early (3 p.m.) but really doesn't take a long time to take in. The museum is a great and inexpensive place for a pit stop away from the crowds for all ages.

Bixby Park
A great place to visit on the way back to the waterfront entertainment is Bixby Park. Bixby Park is full of things to see and great for relaxing by the beach. The park is best enjoyed during the day for a couple of reasons. One being that the picnicking and wandering down to the beach are best experienced during daylight, another reason being that this park like many others gets interesting and a little seedy at night. In a town packed full of homes, businesses, and tourist attractions Bixby Park has great places to see blades of grass and birds instead of concrete and neon.

Boat Ride to Catalina/Avalon
The most notable way to get to this off shore treasure is by way of the Catalina Express. For about $70.00 you can get a round trip ticket to the island and really get in on an island adventure. The trip from Long Beach is about forty minutes each way and takes you to the famous destination with style and grace. The location of over 200 Hollywood movies, Catalina is part of the sub conscious of most Americans whether they know it or not. That said, the island has to be seen up close and personal to really grasp the beauty and splendor.
