Often considered the "heart" of Australia, the city of Melbourne is a fascinating place to visit. This Victoria state capital is centered in a large, metropolitan area, and is the second most populated city in Australia. Businesses and recreation, along with many diverse cultures, create a wealth of interlocking communities within this city. Whatever one is looking for - adventure and fun, serenity and peace - a place to party or an opportunity to relax - can be found any hour of day or night here, any day of the week. English style parks and gardens, as well as Victorian bluestone buildings, lend rich tradition as they are discovered among the newer structures that occupy Melbourne. The rich nightlife pulls in both young and old, and Melbourne's beaches attract others during the night as well as during the day.
Many famous and well known cities have common cultural and fun attractions such as museums, ethnic restaurants, sports and concert arenas, and other locations of interest. What makes Melbourne stand out as a fascinating place to visit?
Architecture:
For those who love history and architecture, Melbourne stands out in Australia as being one of the best preserved cities in terms of its architecture. Although a young world city, the historical Victorian style architecture is well preserved and maintained. Neo-gothic architecture, using brooding bluestone, combines to make Melbourne one very Gothic city. Historical, formerly residential, mansions abound, such as the Airlie Mansion, built in 1891 in a Renaissance Revival style. This one, and others, can be seen on guided walking tours through Melbourne. As one of the first planned cities in Australia, Melbourne relies on itself for character, rather than any particular landmarks. It's collection of landmarks gives it character. Magnificent gardens, wide streets, and notable corners were embraced by Melbourne architects in the early 1800's. There are, of course, many points of interest in the city.
Points of Interest/Activities:
1. The National Gallery of Victoria. The best and most complete collection of Australian art in the country can be found here.
2. The Old Melbourne Gaol. 19th century prison life is brought to life here, very chillingly. The iconic bushranger Ned Kelly spent time behind the walls of this precinct. A visit here gives one full rights to all crime, past, present and future, with a walk to the 19th century gallows, or the chance to put one's self on trial in the modern day courtroom. One could even host an event here if desired!
3. The Queen Victoria Market. No visit to Melbourne would be complete without a stop at this market. Officially opening in March of 1878, many buildings from that time period remain, including the Meat Hall and the Two Story Shops on Victoria Street. Located at the top northern end of the city, the market boast over 1,000 stalls selling everything from fish to vegetables and fruits, deli and bakery items, plus many ethnic foods. Complete with restaurants and cafes, plus seasonal events, this market is an experience not to be missed.
4. Tramcar Restaurant. Tour and dine simultaneously on Melbourne's Tramcar Restaurant. Two to three hour tram tours, complete with three to five course meals, are their specialties. First class restaurants with padded dining seats allow the visitor a unique perspective when touring through Melbourne in this fashion.
5. Melbourne Aquarium. Sharks Alive and over 30 other exhibits will entrance both young and old during a visit to the Melbourne Aquarium. Watch penguins frolic, or dive and walk with the sharks.
There are many, many other places of interest and things to do in Melbourne. See Captain James Cook's childhood cottage that also reflects Melbourne's history. Other museums include the Australian Racing Museum and the Old Treasury Building where one can explore the gold vaults and earn a gold license. Historical photographs and maps figure prominently in this historical treasure of a museum. The Immigration Museum has stories of folks around the world who migrated to Australia. Museums for other interests, such as science, the Holocaust, and railways are all represented in Melbourne.
Beaches for swimming and deep sea diving are here, as well as casinos and nightclubs; International Jazz and Comedy Festivals are held here this year and next, as well as one for writers. National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Botanical Gardens beckon the nature and animal lovers. Sports fan will enjoy the Melbourne Cricket Ground with its huge seating capacity during Cricket competitions.
